Active in Japan since 1953, our Company opened its first office in 1957 in Tokyo. Our partnerships with Japanese companies include oil and gas exploration & production, natural gas supply, manufacturing of chemical products and sales of solar panels and high-tech lubricants.
We had/have been partnering with Japanese companies all over the world (Indonesia, Australia, Qatar, Angola, Italy, Abu Dhabi, Kazakhstan, Azerbaidjan, etc.) to develop and operate Oil and Gas exploration and production licenses and Gas liquefaction plants.
TotalEnergies and Inpex have been notably teaming up to develop the Ichthys gas and condensate field, located off the shores of northwestern Australia, which started production in 2018.
We market Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) to Japan’s top gas and electric power utilities, through our interests in LNG plants worldwide. Our affiliate TotalEnergies Gas & Power Ltd. also supply Japan through direct sales of LNG, sourced from its global portfolio of LNG supply.
In addition to LNG, we sell crude oil to Japanese refiners, as well as naphtha (a distillation product), fuel oil, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and condensate (a type of light oil).
Solar Power Generation
We are actively involved in photovoltaic solar power generation business in Japan. Through TotalEnergies' wholly owned affiliates, we started commercial operations of the 27 MWp Nanao solar power plant in Ishikawa prefecture in March 2017, the 25 MWp Miyako solar power plant in Iwate prefecture in May 2019, and the 52MWp Osato solar power plant in Miyagi prefecture in October 2021. Furthermore, we started construction of the 51 MWp Tsu Haze solar power plant in Mie prefecture in January 2021.
We are also present through Maxeon Japan KK. for which TotalEnergies has shares in its parent company, Maxeon Solar Technologies.
Maxeon Japan distributes its high-efficiency solar panels in Japan since 2010 and is very active in the residential, commercial and industrial markets.
Maxeon (SunPower) was notably chosen as the main panel supplier (69 MW out of 185 MW) for one of Japan's biggest solar power plants, Eurus Rokkasho Solar Park located in Aomori Prefecture. Maxeon also supplied solar panels for another project, the 27 MW Eurus Toyokoro Solar Park located in Hokkaido Prefecture. TotalEnergies and Maxeon continue to develop business in the Japanese solar market.
Offshore Wind Power Generation
TotalEnergies pursues offshore wind power generation projects in Japan also.
TotalEnergies 100% affiliate Saft is the world's leading designer and manufacturer of advanced-technology batteries for industry. Their office in Tokyo, Saft Japan K.K, was established in 2016 but products have been delivered to Japan since 1988 for a wide range of applications: aviation, transportation Train and AGV etc., aerospace, data centers, AED, utility metering, renewable energies projects...
Our affiliate TotalEnergies Lubricants Japan Co. Ltd. offers lubricants to the Japanese automotive market, both to consumers and leading carmakers. We also market auto racing products, motorcycle oils, industrial oils, special fuels and special fluids for industrial applications.
TotalEnergies business unit Lubmarine partners with a top Japanese refiner to supply marine lubricants to ships calling into Japanese ports and to Japanese ships in ports all over the world.
TotalEnergies Aviation, our aviation fuel affiliate, supplies jet fuels to leading Japanese passenger and cargo airlines at several major airports, including Paris Charles de Gaulle in France. We also supply the fuels customers with fuel at Japanese airports (spot sales and charters) through a long-standing partnership with Japanese refiners.
Our specialty chemicals affiliates also operate in Japan. Hutchinson, world leader in rubber and thermoplastic elastomer and polymer has also an office in Tokyo to work closely with Japanese automakers and obtain qualifications of its products.
The joint venture Hanwha TotalEnergies Petrochemical, created with the Korean company Hanwha, has also a branch office in Tokyo and distributes petrochemical products in Japan.
INPEX Corporation is Japan’s largest Oil & Gas Exploration and Production (E&P) company. It also engages in the projects to achieve net zero society through stable supply of diverse and clean energies including hydrogen and renewables.
Total and Inpex teamed up for the first time in Indonesia in 1967 to develop the Mahakam Block in East Kalimantan. This initial partnership is often referred to as the Japanese oil industry’s most successful story and a model of French-Japanese industrial cooperation.
Since then, we have extended our partnership there and work together on multiple projects such as :
TotalEnergies and Mitsui notably cooperate in Exploration & Production for the Tempa Rossa onshore project, located in southern Italy.
Mitsui is one of the Japan’s Big 5 general trading companies.
